[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Real photo postcard of a formerly enslaved couple, incl. a Civil War veteran.



3 3/8 x 5 3/8 in. real photo postcard featuring an African American couple posing with their dog on a porch. The man wears a slouch hat with enwreathed letters "GAR," indicating service in the Union Army, and he holds a violin and bow in playing position. The woman holds a pipe in her mouth. Postcard verso features penciled arithmetic and inscription reading, "Rices at Randolph / 2 slaves." Modern adhered typewritten label notes the man's hat and the meaning of its initials: Grand Army of the Republic.

Stamp box on verso dates postcard to sometime between 1904 and 1918.
